When most manufacturers focus on an alternative engine so far, the Hyundai brand now has in its range of petrol and diesel engines, light hybrids, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric and electric with fuel cell. And if we usually say that it is not good to hunt several hares at once, it is clear that the Korean brand is doing particularly well. The Ioniq EV is one of the most efficient electric cars in the world and its hybrid version did not have much to envy to the production of Toyota in 2016. And this expansion should continue in the coming years since Hyundai has Introduced, with its Concept 45 at the last Frankfurt Motor Show, its new E-GMP platform that allows for flexible battery sizes for all segments, a high-voltage system or the ability to charge up to 400 kW.
While waiting for its production, the brand continues to decline its existing models and Kona, its best French sale with 15,893 units sold since its launch in 2017, is now offered with a hybrid engine, in addition to gasoline, diesel and electric. And unlike the latter with the specific front, this version of the small SUV is not really aesthetically distinguished, with the exception of the logos obviously and (very beautiful) rims that are reserved for it. It is not necessarily a shame as it is full of personality and it is undoubtedly one of the reasons for its success. Same thing inside, identical in all respects, the appearance (apart from the instrumentation level) instead of on board through the boot volume, which is rather good news since it has a good relationship habitability / clutter.
To compliment the engine bay and the underside of the rear seat, Hyundai has simply taken over the tried and tested recipe of the Ioniq outing in 2016: a 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder 105-hp Atkinson cycle backed by an electric motor developing 43, 5 hp, all with a combined power of 141 hp and 265 Nm, and a lithium ion polymer battery with a capacity of 1.56 kWh and a power of 42 kW and a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The official mixed consumption ranges from 3.9 to 4.3 l / 100 km depending on the level of finish, with 90 g / km of CO2 announced, 22 less than the 1.6 CRDi 136 DCT-7, the version that , on paper, seems the closest. The table is on the other hand a little less flattering performance issue, with a 0 to 100 km / h in 11.6 against 10.2 for the diesel version.
From the first laps, we find the ease of driving of the Ioniq. While the Toyota planetary gear train is technically the best in efficiency, it does require a time of habituation and the obligation to adapt its driving to get the best of it, which does not This is not the case here with the double-clutch gearbox in front of which the novices will not be disoriented. Certainly, it is not a lightning war, the couple of the electric allowing him to tear vigorously on the first meters but quickly exhausting then, however the Kona Hybrid is displayed in flexible and silent exchange, which invites to a quiet and flowy driving. This serene atmosphere is disturbed only by a few vibrations on certain imperfections of the road faithfully transmitted in the cockpit by the big 18-inch wheels and a thin enough thickness of the seat of the back seat which loses a good part of its softness.
